Responsibilities

  • Develop and monitor complex Allotment Management Plans (AMPs), watershed initiatives, and NEPA evaluations to ensure full compliance with land use guidelines.
  • Lead integrated weed management strategies, deploying chemical, biological, and mechanical treatments to control invasive species across public and private lands.
  • Cultivate strategic partnerships and secure external funding sources with neighboring landowners and BLM partners for regional weed mitigation programs.
  • Utilize GIS applications to coordinate pre-inventory mapping, delineate soil and vegetation data, and deliver technical assessments to resource planners.
  • Maintain active COR/PI qualifications to oversee project construction, audit vendor contract compliance, and approve final project completions.
  • Serve as crew leader for diverse range projects, managing daily schedules, evaluating member performance, and training lower-graded technicians.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • You cannot hold an active real estate license; nor can you have an interest or hold stocks in firms with interest in Federal Lands.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements. GS-9:

  • One full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-8 level that demonstrates the ability to:
    • Independently conduct rangeland utilization and trend monitoring;
    • Plan, design, and inspect structural range improvements;
    • Execute integrated weed management projects including chemical herbicide application;
    • Compile resource documentation to update automated grazing databases and support NEPA land-use decisions.
  • OR: Two full years of graduate education related to the work of the position such as forestry, range management or conservation, wildlife management, agriculture, crop or plant science.
  • OR: An equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Only graduate education beyond the first 18 semester hours can be combined with GS-8 level experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Physical Demands

  • The incumbent will be in the field approximately 70 percent of the time.
  • Work demands the ability and physical stamina to hike over steep or rugged terrain weighted down with monitoring equipment and perform work in adverse weather conditions.
  • The incumbent may be expected to participate in outdoor assignments year-round with exposure to heat, dust, cold, and arduous physical activity.
  • Motor vehicle (including four-wheel drive) operation may occur under all types of weather and road conditions, and at all times of the day and night.
  • The incumbent may be required to operate UTVs and/or ride horseback.

Work Environment

  • During the field season (normally eight to ten months, March through December), the incumbent can be exposed to weather extremes including temperatures ranging from 40 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, moisture, stinging insects, and other outdoor hazards.
  • During the winter months, the majority of work will be performed in an office setting.
  • Performance of the work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions.

Education

Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement. Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Two full years of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-9. If using education to qualify, you must submit copies of all transcripts or a list of college courses that include hours and grades from an accredited U.S. college/university.

  • This position is temporary and expected to last for up to 6 months with no promotion potential.
  • If selected from this announcement, you may be rehired for identical positions without further competition based on work needs, funding, or any other condition of employment.
  • Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior.
  • This position is not eligible for telework.
