About the Role

A classroom teacher performs under the general direction of the building principal or program manager and with assistance from appropriate staff personnel. The role involves fostering and enhancing an effective learning environment, facilitating curriculum development, establishing learning objectives, providing instruction, counseling, disciplining, and supervising students to meet their individual needs, and evaluating student performance and progress.

Responsibilities

• Fosters an educational environment conducive to student learning and maturation; plans and implements an instructional program tailored to individual and group needs, including at-risk or special needs youth; prepares lesson plans.
• Uses appropriate instructional methods and materials suited to student well-being and the nature of the learning activities, program, or curriculum; implements established objectives and attends in-service training to remain current in instructional methods and techniques.
• Establishes and implements classroom policies and procedures for student behavior and conduct in a positive and supportive manner; provides guidance, counseling, and discipline; makes referrals for additional assistance as needed.
• Confers with students, parents or guardians, and staff to provide guidance, evaluation, and encouragement for student achievement.
• Establishes classroom goals and objectives aligned with State and School District guidelines; evaluates and records student progress; prepares reports for parents or guardians.
• Collects and interprets data; provides reports for administrative purposes.
• Directs the activities of assigned non-certificated personnel.
• Attends and participates in required staff meetings and activities deemed necessary by the District or building principal.
• Serves on staff committees as required and participates in activities to enhance personal and professional skills.
• Performs related tasks consistent with the scope and responsibility of the position.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree; academic preparation or experience in teaching a culturally, racially, and economically diverse student population in an urban school system.
• Additional academic preparation or professional experience may be required for specific programs, such as working with bilingual students, implementing dropout prevention programs, or teaching multi-level, open-concept, and mainstreamed classes.
• Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement.
• Some positions may require valid first aid and CPR certification, a valid Washington State driver’s license, and/or a Class II driver’s license.

Skills

• Knowledge of: Subject areas appropriate to assignment; effective behavior management techniques; effective instructional techniques; rules and procedures for student safety.
• Skill in: Proficiency in reading, writing, and oral communications; effective communication with parents or guardians in a diverse community; designing and implementing lesson plans for students with a wide range of achievement levels.
• Ability to: Engage with students in a positive and confident manner; work fairly and consistently with a culturally, racially, and economically diverse student population; adapt to change and remain flexible; organize activities; manage student behavior; use good judgment to maintain a safe learning environment; provide instruction and demonstrate techniques; use necessary equipment, computers, machinery, tools, or software; direct assistants; administer first aid and CPR where required.

Benefits

Eligibility for benefits is determined by the number of hours employees are anticipated to work during the school year (September 1 through August 31). Any employee scheduled to work 630 hours or more in a year is eligible for benefits. Benefits are administered by the Washington State Healthcare Authority (HCA) under the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB).
