About the Role
The Bilingual Instructional Assistant assists in students' English language acquisition from their native language, provides classroom instructional support to the certified teacher, and serves as a resource for bilingual families, teachers, and the community.
Responsibilities
- Assists in administering tests, homework assignments, and make-up work to support teachers in the instructional process.
- Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments, including translating instructions and materials and adapting lessons for bilingual or cultural understanding.
- Implements instructional programs and lesson plans under the supervision of the teacher to aid teachers.
- Maintains student records, classrooms, and supplies to support teachers.
- Mediates problems between school and government personnel (e.g., case workers, police, community program leaders) to aid teachers.
- Monitors individual students in various settings (e.g., classroom, library, playground) to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
- Performs record-keeping and clerical functions (e.g., scheduling, copying) to support teachers and administrators.
- Provides support in all areas of the school and classroom for student activities (e.g., behavioral problems, truancy) to ensure a safe learning environment.
- Serves as a liaison for families and the community in workshops and cultural events to enrich the family experience in the District and community.
- Interprets verbal and written communications for bilingual students and their families, as well as non-English-speaking parents (e.g., parent-teacher conferences, meetings, documents).
- May assist bilingual special needs students to provide a safe and sanitary learning environment.
- Assists students and families in understanding District programs (e.g., Head Start, Special Education).
- Performs related duties consistent with the scope of the position.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least one of the following:
- Qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment as published by PESB.
- Associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
- Seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight semester credits at the 100 level or higher from an accredited college or university.
- Completion of an apprenticeship as a paraeducator in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
- Valid State of Washington Driver's License or evidence of equivalent mobility.
- Fluency and literacy in a designated second language.
- Ability to translate, interpret, or perform other designated services to meet the needs of students.
Skills & Qualifications
- Knowledge: Basic math; reading and writing documents; understanding complex, multi-step instructions; multiple languages; age-appropriate activities; grammar and punctuation.
- Skills: Operating classroom/office equipment; planning and managing projects; using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.
- Abilities:
- Scheduling activities/meetings; gathering and collating data; using basic job-related equipment.
- Working with diverse individuals and groups; flexibility in various circumstances.
- Problem-solving to identify issues and create action plans.
- Working independently regardless of disability or level; documenting student activities, behavior, and progress.
- Supporting structured learning and behavior shaping activities; relating effectively to students and families.
- Keyboarding; learning to use computers.
Physical Demands
- Significant lifting (up to 50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.
- Some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling.
- Significant fine finger dexterity.
- Job requires 30% sitting, 30% walking, and 40% standing.

Benefits
Eligibility for benefits is determined by the number of hours employees are anticipated to work during the school year (September 1 through August 31). Employees scheduled to work 630 hours or more in a year are eligible for benefits.
