About the role
The Union Container / Chassis / Trailer Mechanic position is available immediately at the Norfolk Southern Pittsburgh, PA rail terminal. This is an entry-level position with no prior chassis maintenance experience required. On-the-job training is provided to help new employees succeed.
Responsibilities
- Daily inspection of all trailers and chassis to ensure they meet safety standards under Federal Highway Administration guidelines.
- Dismantle, repair, and reassemble landing gears, wheel axles, and brakes, including welding if necessary.
- Accurately and legibly complete work orders and ensure they are completed in a timely and consistent manner.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) as required.
- Perform physically active tasks in an outdoor environment, including varying weather conditions.
- Work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see or hear fast-moving equipment.
Requirements
- Valid Drivers License and dependable transportation.
- Ability to pass pre-employment screening requirements (drug test, physical strength test).
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Mechanical and welding experience preferred but not required.
- Must be able to provide your own tools.
Qualifications
- No prior chassis maintenance experience is required.
- At least 1 year of basic mechanical work experience.
- Eager to learn and grow.
Skills
- Hands-on mechanical abilities.
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Able to stay on their feet for most of the day.
