About the role
The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position at RailPros is responsible for providing on-site protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks. Key responsibilities include coordinating job sites, communicating with train dispatchers and engineers, handling and placing safety equipment, and maintaining a safe work environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide required jobsite protection on each assignment, ensuring consistency with railroad rules.
- Communicate with train dispatchers and engineers via radio.
- Ensure work groups are clear of limits during train movements.
- Grant permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits.
- Prepare and submit required electronic forms such as job setup forms, daily work reports, and invoices.
- Handle and place signs, derail devices, and other equipment weighing up to 90 pounds.
- Maintain a high level of communication with RWIC supervisors and managers.
- Participate in safety classes and qualification training.
- Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and respectful workplace culture.
- Adhere to company policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required to meet business needs.
Qualifications
- Able to complete required physical demands and tasks.
- Able to effectively warn roadway workers of approaching trains.
- Understand on-track safety training and qualifications.
- Proficient in radio procedures for communication between RWICs and work groups.
- Proficient in job briefings with all roadway workers.
- Able to place railroad advance warning and stop signs.
- Able to install derail devices and apply locking devices.
- Proficient in electronic communications and standard office applications.

Travel Requirements
This position requires routine and extensive travel across Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Candidates must be willing and able to travel frequently, including overnight stays, in alignment with project schedules and business needs. Daily per diems and mileage reimbursement are provided for all billable days worked.
