About the Role

To perform radiographic exams across all modalities covered under the staff radiographer's license. Monitor and evaluate patient care quality and efficiency as part of a multi-disciplinary team, ensuring care is appropriate for the age population served, as defined in the department's scope of service.

Responsibilities

• Provides technical skills for the operating functions of the treatment area(s):
  • Works with other patient care personnel to improve service delivery.
  • Facilitates open communication within the department to identify and resolve problems.
  • Functions as a departmental resource with advanced knowledge of exam charges, PACS, and computer systems.
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of advanced technical procedures and shares expertise on technical issues.
  • Coordinates all patient care activities in assigned treatment area, ensuring optimal patient scheduling, treatment, record keeping, calculations, and machine functions.
• Performs radiologic procedures in accordance with unit-based standards of practice:
  • Adjusts X-ray equipment and sets exposure factors such as time and distance.
  • Demonstrates effective knowledge of radiographic exposure techniques and protocols.
  • Transfers, positions, and instructs patients regarding procedures.
  • Produces high-quality images and positions patients for optimal data collection while ensuring safety and comfort.
  • Transports patients to the radiographic room and prepares/maintains the room following safety guidelines.
  • Assesses patient data to identify age-specific healthcare needs.
  • Performs procedures across modalities and in unusual situations using advanced knowledge.
  • Corroborates patient clinical history with procedures to ensure accuracy.
  • Prepares patients for procedures, providing instructions to minimize anxiety and gain cooperation.
  • Applies radiation protection principles to minimize risks to patients, self, and others.
  • Operates radiography equipment and associated accessories to perform procedures successfully.
  • Practices aseptic techniques as necessary.
  • Evaluates images for technical quality and prepares patient records in electronic charts.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions and coordinates ordering of supplies.
  • Ensures all lab work meets radiologists' protocols and physicians complete informed consent forms.
  • Prepares, identifies, and/or administers contrast media and medications as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
  • Demonstrates courtesy and effective communication with staff, patients, and physicians.
• Demonstrates correct and safe operation of radiographic equipment:
  • Complies with radiation safety procedures, including shielding patients, techs, and visitors.
  • Correctly uses monitoring devices and complies with room technique.
  • Demonstrates proper preparation and use of contrast media (oral, IV, lower GI, retrograde administration).
• Practices effective communication that enhances teamwork and quality of care:
  • Explains procedures to patients to reduce anxiety and obtain cooperation.
  • Recognizes adverse reactions and responds appropriately through communication with staff and physicians.
  • Demonstrates age-specific care awareness by communicating at an appropriate level for the patient’s age.
• Provides direct or indirect supervision or training for radiologic technology students:
  • Demonstrates radiographic examinations in accordance with school and department policies.
  • Ensures student radiographic examinations are performed according to department policy and are of high technical quality.
  • Collaborates with the School of Radiologic Technology staff to maintain high standards.
• Performs additional duties as required:
  • Completes all hospital-required education on time and ensures employees do the same.
  • Maintains licensure and CPR certification in good standing for self and employees.
  • Ensures the area is regulatory-ready at all times (Joint Commission, DEQ, CMS, ACR, FDA, MQSA, etc.).
  • Answers telephone and receives guests promptly and courteously using AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, and Thank You).

Requirements

• 1-2 years of experience as a radiographer (preferred).
• Graduate of an accredited radiography program or equivalent (required).
• Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field (preferred).
• Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and holds a current Louisiana state license to perform as a radiographer.
• Mandatory cross-training in CT.

Physical Demands

Light Work – Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demands include:

• Walking or standing to a significant degree.
• Sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls.
• Working at a production rate pace, which can be physically demanding even if the weight involved is negligible.
