About the role
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking skilled Radiological Control Technicians (RCTs) to support a variety of work activities across different facilities. RCTs play a crucial role in implementing radiation protection requirements and collaborating with multiple work groups.
Responsibilities
- Radiological Control Technician 4:
- Support field implementation of the Radiation Protection Program through radiological job coverage, workplace surveys, and documentation of radiological data.
- Assist and mentor less experienced RCTs in radiation monitoring, contamination control, emergency response, and work permit documentation.
- Radiological Control Technician 5:
- Provide direct support as the primary Radiation Protection point of contact for job planning, resource coordination, and issue resolution.
- Lead less experienced RCTs in ensuring compliance with radiation protection procedures.
Requirements
- Experience providing radiological support for moderate and high-hazard work.
- Senior-level knowledge in radiation protection principles and practices, with experience in at least one health physics area (e.g., accelerators, reactors, actinides).
- Experience with radiation monitoring, personnel exposure control, and other radiation protection activities.
- Demonstrated experience and skills in conceptualizing and communicating radiological safety/protection concepts.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment such as respiratory protection and anti-contamination clothing.
- Advanced experience in conducting research, investigating alternatives, and recommending solutions.
- Strong technical leadership and coordination skills.
- Advanced ability to implement improvements and ensure ongoing performance.
- Proficiency in using computer-based office applications.
Qualifications
- Radiological Control Technician 4:
- High school diploma and 5+ years of related experience.
- Radiological Control Technician 5:
- High school diploma and 6+ years of related experience.
Desired Qualifications
- Prior DOE RCT experience.
- Active DOE Q clearance.
- Currently DOE Core certified.
- NRRPT (National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists).
- Familiarity with LANL policies, practices, and procedures.
Essential Job Functions
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and carry 35 pounds.
- Reading vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, speaking, hearing in a normal range (500 to 3000 hz).
- Ability to sit, crawl, stand, walk, run, and climb.
- Free from chronic wounds or rashes that disrupt skin integrity.
- Ability to use stairways, fixed ladders, and ladders up to six feet.
Work Environment
- Use of protective clothing, including safety glasses and radiological anti-contamination clothing.
Work Schedule
- This position may require 24/7 coverage, including rotating shifts and weekends.
Work Location
The work location is onsite in Los Alamos, NM.
Position Commitment
The position commitment is 2 years.
Note to Applicants
Successful applicants will be required to arrive 1-2 weeks prior to the RCT training class start date.
