About the Role

This class of positions encompasses responsible clinical and administrative work of varying degrees of difficulty and responsibility involving day-to-day tasks of an operating segment of the Radiology department in the delivery of radiological services. All personnel perform related work. The role involves operating x-ray equipment, developing images, and preparing radiological areas, equipment, supplies, and contrast materials. At a higher level, the position performs complex activities in the delivery of radiographic services and may supervise assigned radiographic and ancillary personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares radiological area, equipment, contrast materials, and supplies as needed for patients.
  • Prepares patient for x-ray, explains procedures, transfers patient to table, positions patient, and assists patient at the end of procedures.
  • Follows prescribed techniques to administer general and specific x-rays.
  • Adjusts equipment, determines proper voltage, current, and desired exposure time, arranges immobilization and support devices, adjusts lead shield, and selects proper imaging techniques.
  • Develops images in accordance with photographic techniques.
  • Observes patient and machine during procedure and reports unusual occurrences; records patient’s condition.
  • Maintains supplies, equipment, and required records.
  • Transports and uses mobile x-ray equipment in patient care areas as required.
  • Follows all proper radiation, patient, and employee safety protocols; adheres to radiation prevention, containment, and control measures.
  • Effectively uses electronic medical records (EMR) to document patient encounters and access pertinent patient data and imaging results.
  • Performs procedures on patients whose conditions require specialized expertise.
  • Assists Radiologists, other physicians, and allied healthcare professionals in performing diagnostic or treatment procedures.
  • Performs diagnostic testing on equipment and general maintenance.
  • Monitors patient and equipment condition during procedure and reports changes to appropriate healthcare professional.
  • Assists and guides radiographers in the performance of a wide variety of x-ray procedures.
  • Trains and assists radiographers in a wide variety of x-ray procedures.
  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates the day-to-day activities of the area to ensure continuous flow of work.
  • Supervises radiographers and ancillary personnel assigned to the area.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment to ensure operational viability of the area.

Requirements

  • Valid license and current registration to practice Diagnostic Radiography as a Radiologic Technologist issued by the NYSDOH.
