Radiation Therapist

About the Role

Under general supervision but according to established procedures, treats patients with prescribed doses of ionizing radiation supplied and controlled through specialized radiation equipment. Prepares treatment room, explains procedures to patients, positions patients, administers treatments, and monitors patients during therapy sessions to ensure comfort and alertness for changes in condition.

Responsibilities

• Reviews patients' treatment charts for prescription, monitor units, prescribed dose, and set-up parameters to accurately deliver a course of radiation therapy.
• Maintains an atmosphere of caring, concern, and support for patients, visitors, medical staff, and coworkers.
• Delivers radiation treatment according to written prescription and treatment plan, ensuring safety and patient care through consistent practice of departmental procedures.
• Recognizes deviations from prescribed treatment delivery and reports all deviations to the chief therapist/physicist.
• Assures quality of treatment delivery through complete and accurate documentation of treatment records.
• Explains treatment procedures to patient and/or family; refers medical questions to appropriate personnel.
• Performs all treatment procedures as needed.
• Assumes responsibility for quality assurance of the treatment machine under the direction of the medical physicist and department manager.
• Produces electronic portal images/imaging as scheduled and adjusts treatment fields as indicated.
• Completes the daily treatment schedule and maintains accurate records of procedures, including billing information and codes.
• Attends chart rounds and/or QI meetings at the direction of the Chief Therapist.
• Provides rotating on-call coverage for treatment of emergency patients on Saturdays and Sundays from 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM.
• Demonstrates flexibility to work outside regularly scheduled hours to provide patient care.
• Participates in the RQI program at GBMC hospital.

Requirements

• 2-year training program in radiation therapy.
• Registered in radiation therapy by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
• Licensed by the State of Maryland.
• Heart Saver (CPR Certification).

Skills

• Thorough knowledge of equipment operations, radiation physics, radiobiology, anatomy and physiology, quality assurance, and patient care techniques.

Pay

Pay range: $36.37 - $59.64. Final salary offer will be based on the candidate's qualifications, education, experience, and alignment with organizational needs.
