About the role

The Racing Official position covers a wide range of duties, including acting as Placing Judge, Paddock Judge, Horse Identifier, Clerk of Scales, Claims Clerk, and/or Clocker.

Responsibilities

  • Placing Judge: Observe races from start to finish, input horse running order into a computer for public display, determine the order of finish using photo finish systems, prepare screenshots of photo finish images, and plot horse locations on images.
  • Paddock Judge: Verify published workouts, ensure horses wear proper equipment, confirm a responsible trainer and groom are present, monitor paddock safety, report late or missing horses, and ensure timely post parade.
  • Horse Identifier: Monitor foal papers and digital certificates, track Coggins test results and vaccinations, and verify horse identities using lip tattoos, microchips, and markings.
  • Clerk of Scales: Oversee the jockey’s room, ensure timely jockey arrival, weigh jockeys in/out, report weight discrepancies, verify jockey equipment, coordinate rider changes, and prepare GPS timing units.
  • Claims Clerk: Monitor the claim box, process claims, ensure order delivery to winning claimants, and conduct fair shakes for multiple claims under Steward supervision.
  • Clocker: Time official workouts, document and report results, monitor morning training, operate the emergency warning system, and hand-time races as a backup to the clocking system.

Additional reasonable related duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications (Excel, Access, Word, Outlook).
  • Preferred knowledge of Ohio State Rules of Racing and how to read a Condition Book.
  • Preferred Incompass Software experience and basic horsemanship skills.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team-focused environment and respond to visual/oral cues.
  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and communicate in English; written communication skills may also be required.
  • Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, including units of American money, weight, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to operate an adding machine and basic computer skills.
  • Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to qualify for licenses/permits required by federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving history as determined by PENN Entertainment’s auto insurance carrier.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand, use hands to handle objects/tools, and reach with hands/arms.
  • Frequently required to talk or hear.
  • Specific vision abilities: close vision, color vision, and peripheral vision.
  • Physically mobile with reasonable accommodations, including ability to push, pull, carry, and lift up to 35 lbs.
  • Ability to push, pull, reach, bend, twist, stoop, stack, crouch, kneel, and balance in varying work areas.
  • Must be drug-free.

Work Environment

  • May be exposed to toxic fumes, chemicals, odors, dust, mechanical parts, electrical shock, and moving objects.
  • Must be able to work in various weather conditions.
  • Moderate noise level; surveillance and audio recording in limited areas.
  • Potential exposure to unrestricted second-hand tobacco smoke.
