About the role

We are seeking a talented, enthusiastic reporter and proven self-starter to cover the rich and distinct experience of the more than 64 million people who make up the United States’ Hispanic and Latino communities, the nation’s largest racial and ethnic minority. This is a temporary staff position (18 months) covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild.

While your primary assignment will be covering Latino affairs, you will also be an integral part of The Associated Press’ Race & Ethnicity team and be expected to contribute generally to the work. This reporter should currently be based in or willing to relocate to New York City. Travel will also be part of the role.

Responsibilities

• Write about all facets of Latino life, from politics to arts and culture
• Respond to breaking news or spot trends
• Think non-traditionally about the beat and beyond common themes like immigration and the border
• Contribute to the AP’s Race & Ethnicity team’s work
• Put people at the center of stories
• Write spot news, features, profiles, and analysis
• Develop story ideas from data or threads and follow them to their conclusion
• Write about complex topics in a manner easily understood by broad audiences
• Tell stories in alternative ways
• Work across all formats and collaborate from a story’s inception
• Drive stories that people will want to share on social media and other platforms
• Pursue innovative and inclusive coverage that maintains AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity
• Work any shift, including nights and weekends, as AP is a 24/7 operation

Requirements

• At least one year of full-time journalism experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk
• Proven track record of breaking news and identifying smart, innovative stories that people respond to
• Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English and Spanish
• Flexible thinking, organizational skills, and the ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities each day

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

Pay

This position is covered by The Associated Press’ contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for an annual salary for Class A staff of between $53,477 and $85,214 based on location and years of professional experience. Compensation is contingent on a candidate’s skills, qualifications, and market location.
