Location: Sparks, MD | Duration: 12 months | Hours: 40/week | Pay rate: $40–55/hr | Schedule: 8 AM–5 PM | Employment type: Contract (W2) – US citizens or Green Card holders only

About the role

The R&D Senior Mechanical Engineer leads mechanical design and development on multi-disciplinary medical-diagnostic instrumentation projects, ensuring schedule milestones are met. This role applies advanced mechanical-engineering principles to solve moderately complex problems, works independently with minimal guidance, and serves as a resource for colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Design and engineer automated mechanical or electromechanical systems and subsystems.
  • Develop design-input specifications for mechanical systems in instrumented products.
  • Apply engineering principles, analytical skills, and empirical methods to create statistically robust designs.
  • Design products to meet cost targets; prepare cost estimates for components and assembly labor.
  • Accurately estimate work effort for assigned engineering tasks.
  • Participate in and contribute to technical reviews.
  • Assess proposed designs for manufacturability and conformance to requirements.
  • Assist in test planning and development to ensure reliability and robustness of instrument systems and subsystems.
  • Complete assignments within established schedules and budgets.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, systems, software, and test engineering teams to develop comprehensive solutions.
  • Generate engineering documents, drawings, and specifications to internal and industry standards (ASME Y14.5M-1994 Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
  • Conform to ISO 9001 and CGMP standards for medical-device design and development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with at least five years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree with at least three years of experience.
  • Product-development experience in a regulated industry; medical-device or pharmaceutical experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated application of engineering principles (heat transfer, fluid mechanics, kinematics, dynamics) in machine design.
  • Experience creating requirements, prototyping, conducting experiments, analyzing data, and writing reports for medical or scientific diagnostic equipment.
  • Five years of experience with SolidWorks in large-assembly, team-based environments.
  • Three years of experience designing complex automation systems (machined metal, sheet metal, metal-frame weldments).
  • Experience with CAD Data Management or PLM systems.
  • Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and robust process-development methodologies (e.g., Design for Six Sigma).
