R&D Engineer II

Location: Franklin Lakes, NJ • Duration: 12 months • Hours: 40/week • Pay rate: $20–30/hr • 1st shift • Contract on W2 (US citizens or Green Card holders only)

About the role

The R&D Engineer II will be a key contributor on an R&D team within Life Sciences – Integrated Diagnostic Solution – Specimen Management. The individual in this position will apply a broad range of technical principles, theories, and concepts to provide imaginative, thorough, and practical solutions to complex problems.

Responsibilities

• Work under the supervision of manager/staff engineers and project leaders to provide solutions for technical problems of increasing scope and complexity.
• Develop mechanical designs and solutions based on engineering analysis to meet performance requirements.
• Analyze design variations, part assembly/disassembly, and performance anomalies.
• Design and perform experimental tests within project scope, ensuring conformance with scientific methods and procedures.
• Contribute as an extended team member on significant projects or lead smaller-scope projects.
• Support material, design, and process changes to the product line through the design control process with well-documented research and analyses.
• Demonstrate accountability for the successful and timely completion of designated tasks.
• Develop technical solutions to engineering problems using sound engineering principles, experimental, computational, and analytical methods.
• Design and develop in vivo and in vitro models to evaluate product features and improvements.
• Apply innovative and logical risk-based approaches to product development challenges with original thinking.
• Develop robust test methods, design test fixtures, and execute measurement system analysis.
• Ensure compliance with BD quality policies, procedures, and practices through communication, training, and education on quality assurance principles.
• Plan, execute, and analyze design of experiments (DOE).
• Write, implement, and lead bench studies, tolerance stack-up analysis, design verification, validation, vendor interactions, materials specifications, and component specifications.
• Perform data analysis using statistical tools, regression analyses, and develop transfer functions.
• Collect, record, report, interpret, and analyze data; present results to peers and business leadership.
• Provide advanced engineering skills and product evaluation support to build business cases for new opportunities.
• Develop and maintain knowledge of products and processes relating to specimen collection through formal and informal training, technical reviews, customer visits, and general business exposure.
• Author protocols and reports, including engineering studies and design verification activities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• B.S.: 2+ years of experience in a technical area; M.S.: 0 years of experience in a technical area.

Skills

• Sound knowledge of engineering fundamentals.
• Familiarity with R&D functional planning, requirement generation, and technical (DFSS/Design/Cross-functional) reviews for all product development phases.
• Familiarity with project management, prioritization, and multitasking to meet tight deadlines.
• Proficiency in solid modeling (Pro/E, SolidWorks, or equivalent).
• Ability to effectively and clearly communicate concepts, ideas, and knowledge to other individuals and teams.
• Familiarity with fixture design, including basic machining considerations and test method development.
• Exposure to Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA).
• Familiarity with Six Sigma (DMAIC) practices and Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodologies.
• Strong creative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
