Quantum photonic engineer at the NNF Quantum Computing Programme (NQCP)
At the Novo Nordisk Foundation Quantum Computing Programme (NQCP), we are establishing a talented and diverse international team to create a cutting-edge quantum programme in Copenhagen, Denmark. Based at the Niels Bohr Institute—where Quantum Mechanics was formulated 100 years ago—we aim to drive research and innovations across scalable quantum processor technologies, quantum-classical control and readout interfaces, and quantum algorithms and applications. Our long-term mission is to develop fault-tolerant quantum computing hardware and algorithms that solve life-science-relevant chemical and biological problems.
About the role
We are seeking an experienced quantum photonic engineer to develop high-quality quantum photonic systems. You will focus on designing, fabricating, characterizing, and advancing state-of-the-art hardware for generating and processing high-quality photonic entanglement, central to our photonic quantum processors. The work will be performed as part of the Photonic Platform team, with responsibilities centered on semiconductor fabrication of photonic platforms, including fabrication, characterization, data tracking, analysis, and reporting. Additionally, you will contribute to the Education & Workforce Development team by developing advanced experimental activities for pedagogical purposes, upgrading photonics labs used for high school, BSc, and MSc levels, and updating the pedagogical approach.
Responsibilities
- Drive the development of advanced fabrication processes in close partnership with Tools Development, Characterization, and Quantum Platform Integration teams.
- Design and implement comprehensive in-process work streams, including technical protocols, testing standards, and quality specifications.
- Help standardize benchmarks between qubit platforms.
- Implement and document experiments, analyze data, and generate reports.
- Engage with the simulation and design of solid-state hardware for photonic entanglement generation.
- Analyze correlations between process parameters and metrology data to refine and stabilize fabrication outcomes.
- Monitor process capability and track variations to identify, lead, and support initiatives that enhance manufacturing excellence.
- Update and upgrade the photonic systems in the teaching lab.
- Coordinate and conduct teaching activities for BSc and MSc level labs.
- Drive the pedagogical part of an interuniversity project in collaboration with DTU.
Qualifications
- PhD in physics, engineering, nanotechnologies, or a related field.
- 2+ years’ experimental work with quantum optics and/or cleanroom fabrication.
- Proven skill in working with photonics (e.g., lasers, single-photon detectors, spectroscopy, linear and nonlinear optics).
- Experience in nanofabrication techniques including electron beam and optical lithography, dry and wet etching methods, and thin film deposition.
- Experience in modeling, controlling, and analyzing experiments.
Why join us?
