About the role

Lead advanced optical systems for neutral-atom quantum computing, designing and validating complex laser-based and optical subsystems that support quantum platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Design, model, and validate complex laser-based and optical subsystems supporting quantum platforms.
  • Develop scalable atom addressing/control technologies including DMDs, SLMs, AODs, EOMs, and multi-beam steering architectures.
  • Implement atom-resolved detection and feedback systems using high-speed sensors and cameras, optimizing for scalability.
  • Collaborate across physics, mechanical, electrical, software, and systems teams throughout development stages.
  • Lead hands-on optical assembly, alignment, debugging, and performance characterization.
  • Create and maintain optical models with Zemax, performing tolerance analysis and optimization.
  • Characterize optical stability, drift, and noise, informing design tradeoffs.
  • Transition research-grade prototypes to reliable, scalable hardware for larger atom counts.
  • Mentor optical engineers, review designs, and establish best practices for optical workflows.
  • Support troubleshooting and cross-disciplinary design reviews to resolve complex issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's in optical engineering, physics, or related field, with 6+ years of experience; advanced degrees preferred.
  • Extensive experience designing and validating laser-based and quantum optics systems.
  • Hands-on optical alignment and troubleshooting expertise.
  • Proficiency with Zemax (OpticStudio) and SolidWorks.
  • Experience with version control systems like git.
  • Leadership or mentoring experience in research or hardware environments.

Skills

  • Background in atomic physics, quantum optics, or photonics preferred.
  • Experience with stability-sensitive optical systems.
  • Strong communication skills and a detail-oriented, ownership mindset.
  • Collaborative and enthusiastic about mentoring engineers.
