Quality Inspector

About the role

The Quality Inspector ensures that steel products processed at the facility meet specified quality standards and customer requirements. This role involves conducting inspections, testing materials, monitoring production processes, and documenting results to maintain compliance with industry standards, customer requirements, and internal quality policies.

Responsibilities

• Perform first/last hit inspection. When not available, the operator/supervisor will step in.
• Conduct 100% visual inspection of all material at the Inspection Stand.
• Report to the Press Operator all defects that are being rejected and the reasons for rejection.
• Report to the supervisor any defects that would cause a coil to be rejected.
• Document all hold-for-inspection or rework material.
• Provide samples and photographs and input into MIS.
• Communicate quality issues to management and supervisors.
• File charts and histograms for Gamma Reports.
• Assist Piler Operators between coils.
• Perform weekly cleaning of all gauges and fixtures.
• Ensure proper function of measurement equipment.
• Assist Press Operators when needed or requested.
• Provide a detailed pass-down to the next Quality Inspector.
• Complete projects as assigned.
• Stop production if necessary to correct quality or safety problems.
• Aid in disposition of material (hold for rework, claim, hold for re-inspection).
• Institute rework process.
• Conduct dock audits.
• Modify or create BQIR’s and RSP’s.
• Create visual aids for the plant.
• Perform internal audits for ISO14001 and IATF16949; report findings to the Quality Manager.
• Complete all daily checklists.
• Collect data for Statistical Process Control (SPC).
• Create quality alerts and training materials.
• Adhere to safety protocols while performing duties.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Steel inspection background.
• Manufacturing background.
• Heavy equipment background.
• Statistical Process Control (SPC) background.

Skills

• Ability to adhere to general office procedures (e.g., protocol, professionalism, punctuality).
• Ability to operate office equipment (e.g., computer system, telephone, copier, facsimile).
• Ability to use/operate appropriate measurement equipment to verify material meets customer requirements.
• Ability to interface and communicate with others (internally and externally).
• Ability to work a flexible schedule to coincide with just-in-time manufacturing.
• Knowledge of steelmaking and ability to identify various types of steel.
• 20/20 vision or corrective lenses to 20/20 sight.
• Strong mathematical skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to read a tape measure, caliper, and micrometer.
