About the role

Tilcon Connecticut is seeking a Quality Control Technician to support operations across quarries, asphalt plants, and paving projects. This position performs inspections, testing, and documentation to ensure materials and production meet company standards and contract specifications. Work locations and schedules are variable and may include overtime, nights, weekends, and travel. The role involves both laboratory and field-based responsibilities and may include general construction-related duties to support operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform quality control inspections, sampling, and testing in both field and laboratory environments.
  • Collect, measure, and test materials including:
    • Aggregates
    • Hot mix asphalt (HMA)
    • Soils
    • Core samples
  • Conduct density testing, mixture testing, and assist with mix design validation.
  • Ensure compliance with contract specifications, quality standards, and testing tolerances.
  • Maintain accurate records, documentation, and databases of test results.
  • Follow established quality control procedures, plans, and guidelines.
  • Communicate test results and quality concerns with plant personnel and field teams.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable standards and procedures.
  • Safely operate hand tools and basic testing equipment.
  • Perform general cleanup and maintenance of work areas and equipment.
  • Support general construction or production activities as needed.
  • Comply with all company policies and OSHA/MSHA safety regulations.
  • Properly wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain regular, reliable attendance and work assigned schedules.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and occasionally at heights.
  • Work overtime, nights, weekends, and variable shifts as required.
  • Assist coworkers and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 1 year of quality control, construction, or related experience preferred.
  • Relevant certifications preferred or ability to obtain.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required.
  • Must pass:
    • Pre-employment drug screening
    • Criminal background check
    • “Fit for Work” physical
  • Strong attention to detail and basic math skills required.
  • Basic computer skills (email, spreadsheets, Microsoft Office).
  • Must be willing to:
    • Work irregular hours including nights, weekends, and overtime
    • Travel and work at various project locations
    • Report to work on time and prepared for the day
  • Strict adherence to all safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous attitude with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Skills

  • Knowledge or ability to learn field and laboratory testing procedures.
  • Understanding of quality control concepts and DOT requirements (sampling methods, testing frequencies, specifications).
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools safely (e.g., shovel, rake, measuring tools).
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work conditions and priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to safety and delivering high-quality results.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
  • Ability to climb, kneel, crouch, crawl, squat, and twist.
  • Ability to use hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work at heights when required.
  • Ability to work under physically demanding and sometimes stressful conditions.

Lifting Requirements

  • Frequently: up to 50 lbs
  • Occasionally: up to 75–90 lbs

Vision & Hearing

  • Close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception required.
  • Adequate hearing for communication and safety awareness.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed in both laboratory and outdoor environments.
  • Regular exposure to:
    • Weather conditions (heat, cold, wet)
    • Dust, fumes, and airborne particles
    • Noise and vibration
  • Occasional exposure to:
    • Moving mechanical parts
    • Elevated work areas
    • Chemicals or hazardous materials
  • Noise levels range from moderate to loud depending on the job site.
