Qualified Medication Aide QMA

About the Role

The Qualified Medication Aide (QMA) is a member of the community nursing team responsible for setting up, administering, and recording certain prescribed medications for residents under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in compliance with state and federal regulations.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and administer regularly prescribed oral, eye, nasal, and ear medications to residents safely and document administrations.
• Prepare and administer topical medications to intact skin.
• Administer PRN drugs, as allowed, when authorized by a licensed nurse.
• Check physician orders against medication forms.
• Maintain cleanliness and proper storage of all drugs, ensuring a clean working environment.
• Keep the medication cart locked while unattended.
• Care for and position all resident tubing and bags as instructed.
• Make rounds and report resident needs and conditions to the charge nurse.
• Administer vital signs and document properly.
• Keep medical records current by charting pertinent resident conditions timely, with co-signature by a licensed nurse.
• Order medications from the pharmacy per physician order.
• Use appropriate drug references if unsure about any medication being administered.
• Count all drugs on Individual Control Drug Records with the on-coming charge CTM at shift change.
• Answer call lights, bed/chair sensors, and security care bracelet alarms promptly and courteously.

Requirements

• Certified as a Qualified Medication Aide (QMA) in the state of employment; certificate must be active, valid, and in good standing.
• Certified as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the state of employment; certificate must be active, valid, and in good standing.
