About the role

This position provides professional metallurgical quality engineering service and technical support involving technical quality, in-process quality, and customer service. It supports the NAS total quality program to improve cost, productivity, yields, and customer requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide metallurgical and technical support for all areas of NAS.
  • Develops, defines, and implements standardized practices to ensure consistent and repetitive process routing for maximum quality, productivity, and yields.
  • Operates within NAS quality standard, relevant industry standards such as ASTM, ASME, AMS; and customer product specifications.
  • Review daily internal quality. Areas of focus could include Melt Shop, Hot Rolling, or Cold Rolling. All areas integrated within these processing facilities are within the scope of responsibility for the Engineer.
  • Aid in determining appropriate corrective actions.
  • Studies and researches customer product needs to insure the proper application of products to meet the specific customer end use requirements and maximize customer relationships.
  • Communicate customer requirements in order to maximize understanding of customer's needs and increase customer service through fewer errors, claims or complaints. This includes identifying critical needs of the customer, communicating these critical needs to the proper section within the organization, and monitoring and controlling the critical needs during the various stages of production.
  • Customer technical support involving new products or product sold to the customer. This includes customer visits for establishing customer specification requirements; follow up visits for product evaluation, and visits for evaluating claims and complaints.
  • Looks for ways to improve and promote quality, demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness. Prioritizes and plans work activities; uses time efficiently.
  • Develop project plans, co-ordinate projects, communicate changes and progress, complete projects within time and budget, manages project team activities.
  • Adapts to changes in the work environment, manages competing demands, changes approach or method to best fit the situation, able to deal with frequent changes, delays or unexpected delays.
  • Follows instructions, responds to management direction, takes responsibility for own action, keeps commitments, completes tasks on time or notifies appropriate person with an alternative action plan.
  • Displays original thinking and creativity, meet changes with resourcefulness, generate suggestions for improving work, develop innovative approaches and ideas, present ideas and information in a manner that gets others' attention.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of B.S. Metallurgical / Material Science / Mechanical Engineering

Physical Abilities Required

  • Mobility in plant
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk
  • Frequent use of hands for technical tasks
  • Occasional lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds

Health and Safety

  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations
  • Follow Company safety rules
  • Report the absence of or defect in any protective equipment or clothing to the Supervisor or Manager immediately
  • Use or wear the equipment, protective devices or clothing that is required to be used or worn: Safety shoes, Safety glasses, Hearing protection, Hard Hat
  • Some areas may require additional personal protective equipment such as: Respirators; the respirator requires you to be clean shaven in order to comply with company policies and procedures as well as OSHA Regulations. Fire Retardant clothing, Acid PPE
  • Report to the Safety Coordinator, Group Lead or Supervisor any contravention of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations or Company policy
  • Must follow all Lock out Tag out (LOTO) guidelines for designated machines
  • Must follow all Environmental Policies and Regulations
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area
