About the role
We are seeking a Publisher to join our Humanities and Social Sciences Journals Group. This is a permanent, full-time role.
This role involves overseeing the management and strategic growth for a defined list of approximately 19 high quality peer-reviewed academic journals in behavioral and social sciences and the humanities, including a large society portfolio. You'll be responsible for developing the portfolio by devising and implementing journal development plans, working alongside leading academics as Editors, Editorial Board Members, Authors, or Reviewers for the journal. Additionally, you'll maintain, foster, and establish new relationships with academic societies and colleagues from across the business.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and develop excellent relationships with external partners, including Editors-in-Chief, Editorial Board Members, and Society representatives for journals within the program, demonstrating strong stakeholder management, communication, and consulting skills.
- Monitor the status of all projects within the program through reporting systems, applying business insights and sound judgment to identify opportunities, address challenges, and liaise effectively with key stakeholders as needed.
- Prioritize journals for development and inclusion in company initiatives by leveraging market intelligence, financial awareness, and a strategic mindset to align decisions with company objectives.
- Support the management of journals by handling contract renewals and recruiting new Editors-in-Chief as required, utilizing strong editorial expertise, consulting skills, and effective stakeholder engagement.
- Resolve queries and maintain proactive communication with Editors and other stakeholders through email, phone, virtual meetings, and occasional travel, demonstrating professionalism, responsiveness, and the ability to balance diverse stakeholder needs.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with production, peer review management, research integrity, marketing, and other internal teams on individual projects and broader topics of mutual interest, fostering strong cross-functional partnerships.
- Maintain knowledge of COPE guidelines and apply strong editorial skills to advise on publication ethics queries, with appropriate supervision and in accordance with company policies and industry best practices.
- Maintain strong teamwork and communication with US and international editorial counterparts on immediate operational matters and long-term strategic initiatives, contributing business insights and supporting coordinated program development across regions.
- Represent Springer Nature at local and international conferences as required, building relationships with key stakeholders, identifying emerging market trends, strengthening industry networks, and creating new opportunities for portfolio growth.
- Perform related duties as required, demonstrating adaptability, sound judgment, effective consultation, and a strategic approach to problem-solving.
Qualifications
- College degree (in a related subject area a plus)
- 3 – 5 years of experience working in a similar publishing role (journals or books) in an academic related field or academic research experience
- Experience of developing and maintaining productive and friendly relations/partnerships with external contacts
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels, as well as work independently
- Excellent communication, influencing and coaching skills
- Strong organizational skills, with attention to detail in administration
