About the role
The Department of Public Utilities (DPU) is seeking a Public Utilities Engineer to oversee the safety and reliability of natural gas, propane, and steam facilities. Key responsibilities include conducting inspections, investigating failures, reviewing compliance with regulations, and assisting in rate filings.
Responsibilities
- Conduct inspections and investigations of natural gas, propane, and steam facilities
- Verify facility fitness for service, reliability, capacity, and periodic maintenance
- Investigate failures of operator's distribution system components
- Review operators' programs, plans, procedures, policies, maps, and records
- Write reports and create documents for the Pipeline Safety Program
- Participate in hearings, rate cases, informal conferences, technical sessions, meetings, and operator training
- Conduct engineering studies of natural gas utility physical plants
- Evaluate physical condition of plant and equipment through on-site audits, inspections, or investigations
- Audit and document findings in appropriate reports
- Assist in rate filings and prepare Department rules and regulations
- Investigate consumer complaints and incidents involving natural gas companies
- Assist in damage prevention program
- Complete other duties as required
Requirements
- At least 4 years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in mechanical engineering or electrical engineering work, with at least 2 years in a professional capacity
- An Associate's degree with a major in mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering technology, electrical engineering, or electrical engineering technology may substitute for up to 1 year of the required experience
- A Bachelor's degree with a major in mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering technology, electrical engineering, or electrical engineering may substitute for up to 2 years of the required experience
- A Graduate degree with a major in mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering technology, electrical engineering, or electrical engineering may substitute for up to 2 years of the required experience and 1 year of the required professional experience
- Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's license

$86,434.92 - $127,235.16 yearly
