The University of California, Irvine Police Department is a 24-hour, year-round law enforcement agency that provides contemporary law enforcement services, including patrol, traffic, investigations, community policing, crime prevention and suppression, and site security services. These services are delivered to a daily population of more than 65,000 people at the University's Irvine campus, the University's Medical Center in the City of Orange, California, and the Irvine Medical Center. About the Role

The Public Safety Supervisor provides for the general safety and security of the UC Irvine, Orange Health, and UC Irvine Health population, physical property, and assets as prescribed by law, regulatory compliance, departmental procedures, and guidelines. Under the direction of the UC Irvine Police Department, the Public Safety Supervisor supports the goals and objectives of the department through the direct supervision of public safety officers (PSO) and public safety ambassadors (PSA). The Public Safety Supervisor monitors and directs security operations while supervising PSO & PSA personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of regulations regarding hazardous materials, fire codes, building codes, and all other relevant safety requirements to operations in assigned unit.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills in mentoring and advising employees while actively cooperating and supporting the work of others.
  • Effectively manage multiple priorities and execute plans to meet deadlines.
  • Coordinate assigned staff schedules and unit operations using strong organizational skills.
  • Work effectively with others to achieve common goals, displaying strong interpersonal and customer service skills to quickly address questions or issues.
  • Apply judgment to evaluate issues and identify potential solutions within defined procedures and policies.
  • Handle sensitive and/or stressful situations with a multi-cultural population, escalating appropriately.
  • Utilize a supervision style that emphasizes teamwork, participation, partnership, communication, and team development to motivate personnel.
  • Conduct sustained foot patrols and/or extended stationary (standing/sitting) post assignments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma and/or equivalent certification/experience/training.
  • Associate Degree from an accredited institution (preferred).
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in security services or an applicable field.
  • Prior hospital security supervisor experience (preferred).
  • Experience working in a University environment (preferred).
  • Bilingual in a second language other than English (preferred).
  • Experience with Taser and use of force principles (preferred).
  • Ability to read, write, and speak proper English.
  • Ability to relate well to a diverse University community.
  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
