Duties

This is a developmental position; duties listed below will be performed in a developmental capacity at the GS-05 / 06 grade level. At the full performance, GS-07, the incumbent will:

  • Receive and effectively evaluate 911 emergency calls.
  • Determine the nature of the call and prioritize all incoming emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Identify the determinant and level of response and provide this and any additional information to the responding units.
  • Provide emergency medical dispatching (EMD) assistance to callers with medical emergencies using the local authority emergency medical dispatch system.
  • Maintain reports and retrieve needed statistical information using the fire incident reporting system(s).
  • Monitor status and availability of police, fire and medical units to assure an appropriate response is made.

Requirements

  • Conditions of employment: Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to work shifts, overtime, weekends, or holidays as required.
  • Incumbent is required to work (mission essential) regardless of weather conditions or base closure and to report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain certifications within 1 year of employment.

Qualifications

  • Specialized Experience: GS-05: One year of specialized experience which includes [insert examples of specialized experience]. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
  • Specialized Experience: GS-6: One year of specialized experience which includes [insert examples of specialized experience]. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
  • Specialized Experience: GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes [insert examples of specialized experience]. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
  • No Time in Grade Requirement for GS-05. Time in Grade Requirement GS-06: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05). Time in Grade Requirement GS-07: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
  • Education: Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions above at the GS-05 level only. GS-06: No education substitution. GS-07: No education substitution
  • FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
