Public Safety Dispatcher

About the role

The City of Ames is seeking Public Safety Dispatchers to operate a complex communications system, handling emergency and non-emergency communications from various sources. Dispatchers coordinate appropriate services, personnel, and equipment for police, fire, or medical emergencies. This role operates within a 24/7/365 environment, requiring shift assignments and occasional mandatory overtime.

Responsibilities

• Receives and processes emergency and non-emergency calls via phone, radio, and other communication systems.
• Dispatches police, fire, medical, and other emergency services as needed.
• Operates and monitors complex communications equipment, including computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems.
• Performs research and provides information to emergency responders and the public.
• Coordinates responses with other agencies and maintains accurate records of incidents.
• Maintains composure and efficiency during high-pressure situations.

• Proficiency in operating computers and communication equipment.
• Knowledge of emergency response protocols and procedures.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.

Pay

Starting annual salary: $57,147 ($27.4745 per hour) as of July 1, 2026. Salary increases based on months of service, per the PPME Bargaining Agreement:

• 0–18 months: $57,147
• 19–36 months: $59,903
• 37+ months: $69,239

Hiring wage incentive: $1,000 paid in increments (50% upon hire, 25% after 6 months, 25% after probationary period or 12 months, whichever is later).
