Public Safety Dispatcher

Join the City of Tolleson as a Public Safety Dispatcher (Lateral) and become part of our team responsible for handling emergency and non-emergency service calls.

About the role

This position involves receiving and processing state, federal, and tribal emergency and non-emergency calls, interviewing callers to determine needed resources, and dispatching appropriate law enforcement personnel. You will relay critical information using dispatch equipment, monitor and maintain the status of emergency personnel, process field requests for driver's licenses, registrations, warrant checks, and criminal histories, and run queries for wanted persons, vehicles, and property. Additional duties include maintaining records, entering warrants in internal and external systems, and performing related work as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Receive and process emergency and non-emergency service calls
• Interview callers and gather details to determine needed resources
• Dispatch appropriate law enforcement and relay critical information using dispatch equipment
• Process and type complete and accurate caller information in both written and verbal form
• Monitor and maintain real-time status of all emergency personnel
• Process field requests from officers for driver's licenses, registrations, warrant checks, and criminal histories
• Run queries for wanted persons, vehicles, and property
• Maintain records and files
• Enter warrants in internal and external systems

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution
• Two (2) years of working experience in a Police and/or Emergency dispatch center
• Arizona Criminal Justice Information System Terminal Operator Certification (ACJIS TOC) within one (1) year of hire
• Valid Arizona driver's license upon hire
• Minimum 35 wpm net typing speed
• Prior experience using word processing and PC applications

Prior law enforcement dispatching experience and bilingual skills (Spanish) are highly desired. This position requires rotation shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

• Applicable police dispatch procedures and public safety agency rules, regulations, and methods of operation
• Operation of dispatch consoles, 911, two-way radio, TDD, computer, and records systems
• Streets, highways, common-place names, and geography of the region
• Reading maps, using computer keyboards, and understanding regional geography

Physical Requirements / Work Conditions

• Stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions
• Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 lbs. occasionally or negligible weights frequently; sitting most of the time

Work is primarily in an office setting. Depending on assignment, some travel may be required.

Pay

Full salary range for this position: $26.60 - $37.24 hourly.
