About the role
Public Safety Associate (PSA) is a uniform position responsible for providing support to Public Safety operations at Children’s Wisconsin facilities. Duties include badge access credentialing, visitor screening, wayfinding, emergency support, and weapon screening to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for patients, families, and staff.
Responsibilities
- Primarily works at Welcome Center stations, greeting and screening visitors per visitation policy.
- Determines guests’ destinations and transportation needs, providing precise wayfinding to clinics, inpatient areas, emergency departments, and amenities on the Milwaukee campus.
- Builds credible relationships with customers by delivering personal attention, demonstrating respect, and maintaining patient confidentiality under HIPAA.
- Performs weapon screening at designated locations to prevent prohibited items from entering Children’s Wisconsin property.
- Secures property or evidence as needed and liaises with local law enforcement.
- Maintains a safe and orderly environment during emergencies, ensuring compliance with department Standards of Work (SOW) and organizational policies.
- Stays current with Children’s Wisconsin policies and procedures through regular review of internal communications and relevant meetings.
- Adheres to the Children’s Organizational Code of Ethics, ensuring personal and supervised actions comply with applicable regulations and laws.
Requirements
- High School graduate or equivalent (GED/HSED) required.
- Post-high school coursework in criminal justice or a related field preferred.
- 1+ years of customer service experience required.
- 1+ years of experience as a uniformed security officer in healthcare, public safety, corporate security, law enforcement, or military service preferred.
- 1+ years of experience performing weapon screening preferred.

- Ability to remain calm under pressure, supporting a safe, welcoming, and therapeutic environment.
- Basic computer skills to troubleshoot and resolve issues with equipment and systems (e.g., PC software, Microsoft Office, CAD, incident reporting, surveillance systems, hospital software like EPIC).
- Strong reading and writing skills for completing reports and recordkeeping activities.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills for independent decision-making in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent customer service and prioritization skills, with the ability to diffuse negativity in stressful situations.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with hospital employees, patients, and visitors.
- Ability to collaborate with team members and create innovative solutions through positive relationships.
- Proficiency in using weapon screening technologies to perform duties effectively.
Qualifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support) Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or National Safety Council required within 90 days of hire.
