Public Information Representative I/II - ESD
About the role
The City of San José is seeking a Public Information Representative I/II to join the Environmental Services Department (ESD) Communications Division. ESD manages garbage and recycling services, watershed protection, municipal drinking water and recycled water, sustainability initiatives, and the San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement public outreach plans and campaigns for ESD programs and initiatives.
- Conduct community engagement activities such as presenting, tabling, and canvassing.
- Maintain relationships with public and private agencies, organizations, and vendors.
- Create and edit communications materials including social media posts, brochures, flyers, web pages, video scripts, newsletters, news releases, talking points, advertisements, memos, surveys, and reports.
- Manage content on ESD’s website ensuring ADA compliance.
- Develop and edit videos.
- Create graphics designs using Canva or Adobe Creative Suite.
- Manage project Sharepoint archives documenting all aspects of projects.
- Research and share new ideas and tactics to enhance outreach to diverse community groups and target demographics.
Requirements
No minimum experience required for Public Information Representative I. Two years of progressively responsible professional public information, marketing, or public relations experience is required for Public Information Representative II.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in journalism, communications, advertising, marketing, public relations, public administration, or closely related field.
- Job Expertise: Knowledge of professional/technical principles and practices, Citywide and departmental procedures/policies, and federal and state rules and regulations.
- Teamwork & Interpersonal Skills: Effective relationships with co-workers and supervisors, helps others accomplish tasks, uses collaboration and conflict resolution skills.
- Problem Solving: Approaches situations by defining the problem, determining significance, collecting information, using logic and intuition to arrive at decisions/solutions.
- Computer Skills: Experienced with common business computer applications including Adobe Acrobat, MS Outlook, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, MS SharePoint, and MS Excel.
- Communication Skills: Clearly conveys information and expresses thoughts and facts, demonstrates effective use of listening skills, displays openness to other people’s ideas and thoughts.
- Customer Service: Anticipates internal and external customers' needs, delivers services effectively and efficiently, in a timely, accurate, respectful, and friendly manner.
- Flexibility: Makes effective decisions and achieves desired results in the midst of major changes.

Pay
Public Information Representative I salary is $88,015.20 – $107,103.36. Public Information Representative II is $97,144.32 - $118,067.04. All salary ranges include an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation.
Schedule
The schedule for this position is typically full-time, with occasional weekend or evening events.
