About the role
The Public Information Coordinator serves as the agency’s primary point of contact for internal and external communications, managing newsletters, website content, media relations, and public outreach.
Responsibilities
- Plan, gather, write, and produce the South Carolina Forestry Commission’s internal and external newsletters.
- Maintain and update the agency’s website, including creating new content, ensuring technical performance, and serving as the contact for third-party developers.
- Serve as the official agency spokesperson, providing accurate and timely media responses on wildfires, emergencies, and agency services.
- Respond to information requests from media, landowners, citizens, and partners regarding prescribed burns, wildfires, smoke complaints, and agency services.
- Write, edit, and distribute press releases (e.g., Red Flag Fire Alerts, burn bans, arrests).
- Perform basic photography, layout, graphic/photo manipulation, and design work to reinforce agency branding and messaging.
- Manage media contact lists and perform administrative duties, including printing, mailing, financial reporting, and recordkeeping.
- Represent the agency at partner-led, education-related, and community events (e.g., Wood Magic, FASC annual conference).
- Collaborate with agency employees, departments, and external partners to create engaging content for the agency’s Tree Country newsletter.
- Perform other duties as required to support the agency’s mission and strategic initiatives.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree with experience in developing and disseminating informational material using visual media and digital platforms.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Criminal background check required.
- Ability to work in an office environment and outdoors for agency, partner, and community events.
- Must be able to remain stationary for extended periods while working on a computer and lift up to 25 lbs.
- Travel required during regular business hours, occasionally at night, on weekends, or for multi-day out-of-town events.
- Night and weekend monitoring of and responsiveness to internal and external communications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Mass Communications, or Communications.
- One year of relevant experience writing, producing, editing, packaging, and distributing content for internal and external audiences.
- Experience producing organizational newsletters, promotional materials, and information-based collateral.
- Working knowledge of WordPress for website design, population, and maintenance.
- Proficiency in Associated Press (AP) style, journalistic principles, and strong spelling/grammar skills.
- Ability to conduct primary research, synthesize information from multiple sources, and convey it clearly and engagingly.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to establish rapport with stakeholders.
- Proficiency in Microsoft and Adobe software applications.
Schedule
Normal work schedule is Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with occasional night, weekend, and overnight work required for events or emergencies.
Position is subject to random, post-incident/accident, reasonable suspicion, and rehabilitation drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC’s Drug-Free Workplace policy.
