About the role

The Office of Communications at the Department of Labor (DOL) is responsible for all internal and external agency communications. The Office works in coordination across the agency to amplify the work the Department does on behalf of all agency customers.

Responsibilities

  • Identify opportunities to showcase the work of the Department to broad public audiences.
  • Work with team managers to meet critical internal and external deadlines.
  • Ensure timely and appropriate responses to media inquiries with an emphasis on transparency.
  • Advise on strategies to make social media channels relevant and fresh to attract new audiences.
  • Perform data analysis on social media metrics with the goal of increasing reach.
  • Review all work from respective teams.
  • Maintain brand and messaging consistency across all content creation.
  • Oversee video and design content creation, ensuring accuracy and adherence to branding guidelines.
  • Work in coordination with marketing staff on various projects to amplify initiatives internally and externally.
  • Coach staff on performance improvement and support professional development.

Requirements

  • Valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and capacity to meet transportation needs of the position.
  • Ten years of experience in public relations, social media, and digital communications, two years of which must have included program management or supervision of professional staff.
  • Ability to initiate and maintain relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success in building and maintaining coalitions and relationships with both external and internal stakeholders.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills and high degree of responsiveness.
  • In-depth experience managing social media channels with an emphasis on metric-based decisions that directly led to growth.
  • Experience making strategic decisions and committing to a course of action.
  • Experience working with an active principal relaying agency messaging to a variety of stakeholders including the media and members of government.

Qualifications

  • Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree in Communications, English, Public Relations, Social Media, Digital Communications, or a similar degree substitutes for two, four, or five years of experience.
