PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE III
About the role
The County of Monterey Health Department’s Public Health Bureau is seeking to fill one vacant Public Health Nurse III position in the Immunization (IZ) and Communicable Disease (CD) Unit. The IZ/CD Unit is responsible for the prevention, investigation, and control of vaccine-preventable and other reportable communicable diseases in Monterey County.
Responsibilities
- Serves as the County’s Immunization Coordinator and plays a key leadership role within the Communicable Disease Unit.
- Coordinates immunization program activities, including oversight of Vaccines for Children (VFC) program requirements, vaccine management, and ensures compliance with state and federal immunization guidelines.
- Serves as the Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Coordinator, providing case management and provider education to prevent perinatal transmission.
- Supports overall CD Unit operations by maintaining a communicable disease caseload; conducting timely case and contact investigations; coordinating care; and providing education to patients, providers, and the public.
- Maintains and reviews work of nursing staff, mentors staff on disease control activities, and supports outbreak investigations in collaboration with internal and external partners.
- Implements and monitors program protocols and procedures; ensures completion of grant scope of work deliverables; prepares reports; and conducts quality improvement activities.
- Provides training and technical consultation on immunization practices, communicable disease control, and reporting requirements, and participates in community collaborations and public health emergency response activities.
Requirements
Thorough Knowledge Of The principles, methods, and procedures of public health nursing. Working Knowledge Of Community aspects of nursing programs including provisions for continuity of patient care, nursing services in health programs and nursing care in the home. Epidemiologic investigations; causes, control, and care of chronic and communicable diseases and illness, handicapping conditions, mental illness, and other disabling conditions. Environmental, sociological, and psychological problems associated with public health nursing clients and families. Normal and abnormal human physiological development and behavior patterns. Principles and procedures involved with family planning, sexually transmitted diseases, maternal and child health, child growth and development, and communicable diseases. The laws, codes, and standards applicable to specific public health programs. The use of community resources for assistance in public health programs. Some Knowledge Of The principles and practices used in public health program coordination and implementation. Principles and practices of staff supervision and development. Federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing public health. Principles of mental health. Basic statistical concepts.

- Ability to speak, read and write in English and Spanish.
