About the role

The Oregon Department of Human Services seeks a Public Benefits Specialist to support diverse communities in accessing vital services. This role involves interviewing and assisting applicants for various programs, including SNAP, TANF, ERDC, LTC, and Medicaid.

Responsibilities

  • Interview and assist applicants in-person and by phone for benefit programs.
  • Complete accurate and timely eligibility determinations, redeterminations, and reviews.
  • Communicate eligibility decisions clearly to applicants.
  • Provide person-centered, trauma-informed services to identify and address customer needs.
  • Participate in professional development and ongoing cultural awareness training.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of experience working at the Human Services Specialist 1 level for the State of Oregon; OR
  • Two (2) years of experience working with the public, providing assistance and interpreting and applying policies, rules, or guidelines; OR
  • An associate degree in a Behavioral Science, Social Science or a closely related field AND six (6) months of experience working with the public, providing assistance and interpreting and applying policies, rules, or guidelines; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience relative to the class concept.

Qualifications

  • Experience providing services with respect and compassion for community members who have historically been marginalized, underserved, in crisis, or disadvantaged.
  • Experience conducting work that requires attention to detail, particularly with data entry and reviewing financial or technical documents.
  • Experience with technical skills that include basic computer knowledge, Microsoft Office software, and learning new web-based platforms.
  • Experience recognizing symptoms and behaviors that originate from adapting to trauma and using trauma informed de-escalation tactics to minimize re-traumatization.

Skills

  • Bilingual in English and one of the following languages: Spanish, Ukrainian, Korean, or American Sign Language (ASL).

Schedule
