About the role
This is a permanent, full-time, in-person position located in Roseburg, Oregon. The role is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and is not eligible for remote work. Bilingual English/Spanish is required; after passing the Spanish language exams, a 5% bilingual differential is added to the base pay.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the first point of contact for customers visiting the ODHS office in person, online, or by telephone, fostering a welcoming and trauma-informed environment.
- Assist Oregonians applying for programs such as medical assistance, cash for families (TANF), Domestic Violence services, food benefits (SNAP), childcare assistance (ERDC), and long-term care services.
- Answer inquiries about case status, provide information on accessing community resources, and guide applicants through the online portal, phone, or in-person interactions.
- Work collaboratively within a team that rotates tasks to meet the office’s business needs.
Requirements
- Two years of experience in a reception area or call center, involving high-volume work such as interviewing, data entry, or ensuring application accuracy; OR
- An associate degree in Behavioral Science, Social Science, or a closely related field and six months of experience in a busy reception area or call center; OR
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Skills
- Customer Service: Professional demeanor delivering quality service daily via telephone, in writing, or in person.
- Computer Skills: Proficiency with computers, web browsers, databases, Microsoft Office, and general office equipment (phone systems, copiers, scanners, fax). Experience using multiple systems simultaneously for research and tracking.
- Communication: Ability to convey technical concepts—including complex rules, regulations, and procedures—to customers with diverse learning styles. Experience interpreting non-verbal cues, simplifying information, using relatable examples, and confirming comprehension through active listening.
- Collaboration: Experience elevating team member voices, fostering inclusion, and building relationships.
- Accuracy & Attention to Detail: Experience reviewing and verifying information for accurate data entry and developing a comprehensive understanding of assignments to determine appropriate outcomes.
- Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging: Experience using trauma-aware and strength-based practices to create an inclusive environment. Ability to assist individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and provide equitable service to overcome barriers.
Working Conditions
- In-person role in the storefront office, Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM.
- Regular contact with the public, including Oregonians experiencing emotional and financial stress.
- May require prolonged periods of sitting at a computer or telephone.
Background Checks
- Finalists will undergo a criminal history and background check; adverse results may lead to disqualification.
- No visa sponsorship is offered.
- Within three days of hire, you must complete the US Department of Homeland Security’s I-9 form and E-Verify process to confirm work authorization.
Pay
Salary range: $4,051 – $5,298 per month.
