Description

Under the supervision of the Director of Literacy Education, the Part-Time Literacy Education Instructor is responsible for teaching and ensuring that proper procedures are followed and appropriate resources are available to meet the needs of each student in the Literacy Education Classroom. The position will ensure that literacy education students receive appropriate levels of instruction based upon their respective placement testing score(s). The position will monitor students' progress and strive to enhance students' success.

Examples of Duties

  • Assist the literacy education program in meeting or exceeding state benchmark percentages for completion of Education Functional Levels (EFL), Measurable Skills Gains (MSG), Post-testing, and students obtaining and retaining employment.
  • Aid students in entering postsecondary education or job training.
  • Aid in recruiting for Halifax Community College's English as a Second Language Class, Halifax Community College's Literacy Education Class, and other relevant programs.
  • Maintain students' records and documents.
  • Meet classes as assigned by contract.
  • Use a variety of teaching and learning styles.
  • Take professional development trainings, webinars, meetings, seminars, and conferences.
  • Follow the North Carolina Community College System College and Career Readiness - Adult Basic Education Content Standards and Benchmarks.
  • Maintain excellent multitasking, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Maintain weekly/monthly lesson plans.

Minimum/Required Qualifications

  • Required:
    • Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution in Education or a related field.
    • Prior teaching experience.
  • Language Skills:
    • Effective written and verbal communication and collaboration skills required.
  • Computer Skills:
    • Knowledge of email systems.
    • Online system skills.
    • Self-service Attendance.
    • Google Apps.
    • Microsoft Windows.
    • Word processing software.
  • License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:
    • Not Applicable.

Physical Requirements

Occasionally requires lifting (10-15 pounds), repetitious finger and wrist movement, and reaching both high and low.

Equipment

Generally, this employee must be able to operate office equipment such as personal computer, fax machine, photocopier, etc.

Travel

Travel is an expected part of the job.
