About the Role
To conduct cognitive assessments for all children on the inpatient rehabilitation unit, including teens and children with traumatic or acquired brain injuries, multi-trauma, spinal cord injury, or other new decline in function. Coordinate care with a multidisciplinary team to aid in the patient's return to the school setting.
Responsibilities
- Constructs and administers appropriate assessments of learning, dependent on the severity of injury, to identify learning and cognitive challenges of assigned students.
- Communicates regularly with the hospital multidisciplinary team, parents, and schools to report daily progress in school work and behavior through reports, charting, phone calls, and conferences to optimize return to school.
- Meets with all appropriate school-aged children/teens on the inpatient unit daily to facilitate cognitive goals, assist with school work recovery, or relearn academic skills to maximize transition back to school upon discharge.
- Establishes and maintains rules/procedures and budget for the program.
- Develops and administers a TBI (traumatic brain injury) Education Program to bridge educator gaps in TBI knowledge.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or related field is required.
- Master's Degree in Special Education is preferred.
- 3 years of classroom experience; 1 year of experience teaching children with cognitive impairments.
- Teacher certification for the State of South Carolina.
