Locum Correctional Health Services (CHS) is a province-wide, specialized program providing care for clients who are incarcerated in one of BC’s 10 provincial correctional facilities. CHS is part of BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services (BCMHSUS) under the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), serving adult clients across correctional centres in British Columbia. Services include medical and nursing care, primary care, mental health and substance use treatment, emergency response, opioid antagonist treatments, dentistry, and post-discharge supports.

Alouette Correctional Centre for Women in Maple Ridge, BC, offers a non-judgemental environment focused on healthcare access and healing for incarcerated individuals, who often experience poorer health and higher rates of chronic illness.

About the role

The Psychiatrist will assess and manage patients with substance dependence and/or mental health issues in a correctional setting. Working collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team, you will plan and support patient recovery and rehabilitation, contribute to team education, and advance mental health care for this population. Cross-appointments with the University of British Columbia’s Department of Psychiatry are encouraged.

Responsibilities

• Assess and manage patients with complex mental health and substance use disorders.
• Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to plan and deliver patient care.
• Support the ongoing education of the clinical team.
• Apply a trauma-informed approach in clinical work and professional relationships.

Requirements

• Passed or eligible for Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) examinations in psychiatry or comparable qualifications.
• Eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC).
• Completed a recognized training program in Psychiatry.
• Experience working with patients across a broad spectrum of psychiatric illness, substance use disorders, and personality difficulties.
• Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Assets

• Experience in Correctional Health.
• Additional certification or training in relevant areas.
