About the Role

Western State Hospital is seeking a full-time Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Floater to provide cross-coverage across the facility. This role delivers psychiatric care for assigned units and provides Staff On-Duty and Psych Backup coverage for the hospital as scheduled.

Western State Hospital (WSH) is a 302-bed Joint Commission/CMS-accredited psychiatric facility located in the scenic Shenandoah Valley. WSH serves adults with serious mental health needs and is nationally recognized for its Psychosocial Rehabilitation “Learning” programs. The hospital provides a modern clinical setting and a therapeutic environment for patients, supported by highly qualified staff. Staunton offers a high quality of life with nearby cities such as Charlottesville and Harrisonburg providing dining, entertainment, and outdoor activities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct psychiatric care of patients on assigned units, including:
    • Psychiatric assessment
    • Patient and family interviews
    • Psychopharmacologic management
  • Plan and implement psychiatric, medical, and behavioral rehabilitation treatment plans for patients
  • Serve as a liaison with community mental health center staff in preparing and implementing patient discharge plans
  • Supervise psychiatric nurse practitioner students
  • Review case formulations, treatment plans, documentation, and other activities of nursing students on the service
  • Review orders, emergency decisions, and treatment plans made by others (ODs) for patients on the service

Requirements

  • Knowledge of psychiatry at the Nurse Practitioner level, which requires post-graduate nursing education with special training in psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment/therapeutics
  • Knowledge of laboratory evaluations and laboratory monitoring of psychopharmacologic agents
  • Expertise in the application of nursing practices, ability to teach individuals and groups, consultation, collaboration, and problem-solving skills

Pay

Hiring range: $133,023 to $183,571
