About the role
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides psychiatric assessments and medication management to children and adults experiencing a behavioral health crisis within a 24-hour per day, 7-day per week Crisis Stabilization Center.
Responsibilities
- Provides psychiatric and substance abuse care and medication to appropriate clients applying standards of care consistent with good medical judgment and current practice in the psychiatric community.
- Administers intramuscular medication when appropriate.
- Performs psychiatric and substance abuse examinations for diagnostic evaluation, treatment needs, and prognostic factors.
- Detects the presence of danger to self or others and collaborates with the treatment team to implement appropriate precautions.
- Maintains monitoring of pharmacological effects of prescribed psychotropic medications and notifies the team of their effectiveness.
- Collaborates with other professionals in the community to integrate agency treatment with overall medical care.
- Produces necessary reports to other agencies concerning clients who have been examined and/or treated.
- Prescribes appropriate laboratory testing and conducts relevant studies or tests.
- Implements follow-up as needed.
- Uses time management skills to maximize availability for direct client contact.
- Collaborates with other members of the treatment team in providing integrated care.
- Facilitates sharing of data with clients to facilitate partnered decision-making and keep them informed of progress.
- Completes Quality Improvement (QI) Training during onboarding and participates in QI refresher training as needed.
- Cultivates a culture of inclusion for all employees that respects their individual strengths, views, and experiences.
- Adheres to all safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for all employees.
Qualifications
- Masters' degree in advanced nursing practice in psychiatry from an accredited program.
- New York State license and registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) in Psychiatry.
- Current DEA registration.
- Certification required in Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) (i.e., suboxone).
- Substantial clinical experience with the diagnosis and treatment of the entire spectrum of mental disorders, in outpatient and/or inpatient settings.
- Experience managing seriously and persistently ill clients as well as those with psychiatric and co-occurring substance abuse disorders.
- Familiarity with current DSM criteria.
