Participates as a member of the care team by assisting in the planning, providing, and evaluating of psychiatric patient care under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Works as part of the multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of the customer and to support departmental objectives.
Responsibilities
- Cares for individuals with mental or emotional conditions or disabilities, following the instructions of licensed healthcare providers.
- Provides quality customer service, participates in performance improvement efforts, and assumes responsibility for professional growth and development.
- Delivers care in a prompt and professional manner, maintaining confidentiality and respect.
- Provides direct patient care, including patient orientation to the unit, assisting with activities of daily living, taking vital signs, and reporting observations to the nurse.
- Participates in unit activities and regularly communicates observations to leadership.
- Collects test specimens as directed according to established procedures and documents patient care activities.
- Performs Limited Laboratory Services: patient identification and preparation for specimen collection, processing samples for testing, performing required quality control testing and instrument maintenance, and maintaining competency/certification.
Requirements
- High School degree or equivalent required.
- Ability to read, speak, and write English; bilingual preferred.
- Enrollment in Rowan’s Psychiatric Technician program; must receive Psychiatric Technician Certification (MHTC) within 6 weeks after successful completion of the apprenticeship program.
- American Heart Association BLS required within 30 days of hire or transfer.
- Certified Prevention Intervention Annual Education required within 90 days of hire or transfer.
- 1 year of mental health or related experience preferred.
- Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; training provided within 30-60 days from date of hire.
Work Environment
- Potential exposure to hazards of the hospital environment, such as infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, and hazardous waste.
- Requires considerable standing, reaching, and walking; ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
