About the Role

As a Protection & Control (P&C) Engineering Specialist II- Sr at Oncor, you’ll install, test, troubleshoot, and commission P&C equipment, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, and associated communication devices. This role provides leadership and guidance to other technicians to ensure proper operation of system protection relaying schemes and SCADA systems, aiming to eliminate or limit damage, prevent the spread of system disturbances, reduce customer outages, and minimize the risk of cascading electrical system blackouts. Additionally, this position supports Oncor’s financial targets from a construction and commissioning standpoint.

Responsibilities

• Install and supervise the installation/commissioning of protection and control facilities, modify designs as needed, test and calibrate protection schemes and SCADA equipment, and provide direction for the technical aspects of substation construction projects.
• Support Construction Management and District construction schedules.
• Support the Transmission Project Management Office (TPMO) by tracking progress, updating, and maintaining construction tools approved by Oncor technology.
• Assign both Oncor and contract Technicians to tasks to develop their performance skills and experience level.
• Provide direction and dictate the scope of work for construction projects.
• Manage and submit station outages, prepare and review procedures, and ensure all test data is captured and submitted to maintain compliance and proper commissioning of protective relaying equipment.
• Develop testing plans and test and install protective relaying equipment, relaying schemes, associated communication equipment, and SCADA systems to ensure system integrity and reliable operation of the ERCOT bulk power transmission grid.
• Monitor and analyze the performance of the protection and control system, analyze digital fault recorder information, investigate questionable operation, troubleshoot and repair the system, and recommend programmatic solutions.
• Develop written procedures for use by both Oncor and contract P&C Technicians to ensure safe construction activities without unnecessary system exposure or interruptions.
• Provide technical direction for mobile equipment installation to ensure safe and reliable operation of the transmission system during construction activities.
• Perform emergency protection system modifications and high voltage switching to restore electrical service safely.
• Actively participate in the technical development of other technicians under your charge.
• Supervise and provide guidance for multiple groups throughout construction projects.
• Perform periodic employee reviews regarding performance relative to expectations.
• Perform all essential aspects and functions of the job as well as any other specific job requirements.

Requirements

• High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent and 7+ years of relevant work experience is required.
• Will consider applicants with an Associate’s Degree in a related field and 5 years’ experience or a Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering Technology or similar field and 3 years' experience.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• For Protection & Control Engineering Specialist II: Must have completed the necessary Technician Required Objectives (TRO’s) and progression testing requirements set by the Transmission Staffing Work Group (TSWG) or have comparable experience equal to that of a Tech II with TSWG committee concurrence.
• For Protection & Control Engineering Specialist Sr: Must have completed the necessary Technician Required Objectives (TRO’s) and progression testing requirements set by the TSWG or have comparable experience equal to that of a Senior Tech with TSWG committee concurrence.
