About the role
The Senior Protection & Control (P&C) and System Engineer works on T&D substations for AC, HVDC, and FACTS projects with designers, peer engineers, and leaders. They are responsible for reviewing P&C designs developed by project teams to confirm compliance with project specifications and applicable standards. The Engineer mentors the secondary design team, acts as its main technical authority, and represents GE on external standards committees (e.g., IEEE). This role drives business strategy through detailed technical and economic understanding of the marketplace, providing customers with optimal solutions while ensuring engineering cost, time, and quality performance.
While primarily focused on reviewing designs prepared by other team members, the Senior Protection & Control Engineer may also serve as the project engineering manager for small to medium-sized, secondary engineering-focused projects. The role requires continuous learning to stay updated with new technologies and provide technical direction aligned with grid transition needs.
Responsibilities
- Ensure high-quality design of protection schemes for T&D substations, Data Centers, Industrial, and BESS applications, including one-lines, three-lines, AC/DC schematics, and relay settings.
- Review, optimize, and seal (P.E. stamp) protection and control designs prepared by yourself or other team members.
- Lead and coordinate all P&C technical aspects of AC power substation projects, ensuring safe and successful operation of power system equipment.
- Review, optimize, and seal single-line diagrams and detailed designs for auxiliary systems (Diesel Generator, Low Voltage Switchgear, AC/DC distribution panels, batteries, and battery chargers).
- Review power system load flow studies, fault studies, relay setting coordination, and transient studies performed by other agencies.
- Develop or review outage, cut-over, and testing procedures.
- Familiarize with IEC 61850 process and system bus architecture and its implementation for substations.
- Interface with internal and external team members, including Protection and Control Engineers, Lead Engineers, Project Engineers, Electrical Designers, Civil Engineers, Physical Designers, Draftsmen, Project Managers, Sourcing, and support organizations.
- Engage with customer technical representatives.
- Analyze post-fault records to confirm correct operation of system design.
- Lead or support factory acceptance testing and site testing & commissioning.
- Develop proposals, including writing and reviewing technical specifications, estimating design man-hours and materials, supporting sourcing for vendor quotations, and developing clarifications, exceptions, technical responses, and validations.
- Apply extensive experience in technical problem-solving and Lean techniques.
- Master the secondary engineering discipline (processes, tools, and technical aspects).
- Develop high-quality design templates and tools to support the secondary design engineering team and the business.
- Define processes, procedures, perform Root Cause Analyses (RCAs), implement corrective actions, and validate process control.
- Support quality initiatives, including aspects of ISO 9002.
- Demonstrate leadership behaviors, including acting with humility, leading with transparency, and delivering with focus.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university or college.
- Must have a P.E. License in the U.S.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in system protection schemes, relay selection, primary equipment interface requirements, operational analysis, communication systems, and maintenance practices for transmission, distribution, and generation protection applications at both AIS and GIS substations.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in design reviews and technical mentoring.
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 10% of the time, including international travel, for meetings and on-site commissioning tests for customer installations, while complying with all relevant company travel and tax policies.
Desired Characteristics
- Extensive experience in protective relaying coordination and practices.
- Good understanding of circuit breakers, fuses, circuit switchers, transformers, shunt reactors, capacitor banks, harmonic filters, HVDC, and FACTS systems used in the control of power flow, detection, and isolation of power system faults.
- Membership in Standards Committees such as IEEE or willingness to become a member.

Pay
The salary range for this position is $122,300.00 - $163,100.00 USD annually. The specific salary offered may be influenced by factors such as the candidate’s experience, education, and work location. This position is also eligible for a performance bonus, with a total potential compensation range of $122,300.00 - $203,900.00 USD annually.
