About the role

The City of Brooklyn Park is seeking an experienced Prosecuting Attorney to lead our prosecution team. In this vital role, you will serve as the City's lead legal representative, handling petty misdemeanor, misdemeanor, and gross misdemeanor crimes.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare briefs, opinions, pleadings and other legal documents.
  • Confer with attorneys, city employees and interested parties regarding criminal prosecution cases and trials.
  • Conduct legal research; maintain accurate case records, prepare comprehensive reports.
  • Interview prospective complainants and police officers regarding statutory violations and complaint filings.
  • Prepare witnesses, including law enforcement officers, for courtroom testimony.
  • Provide legal training, relevant case law updates, and procedural advice to the police department and designated stakeholders.
  • Collaborate and interface with city officials on criminal prosecution topics and assist in drafting new legislation.
  • Represent the city in court during payable offenses, arraignments, pretrials, evidentiary hearings and trials.
  • Prepare and respond to Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) and asset forfeitures.
  • Prepare expungement responses and appeals, communicate with judicial branch regarding court policies and procedures, and restorative court.
  • Author strategic legal advisories and actionable training memorandums for internal departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Education: Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree in law.
  • Experience: Five (5) years of prosecutorial experience.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Minnesota and eligible to renew every 3 years. Attorney in good standing with the MN Ethics Board. Valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge: Knowledge of United States and Minnesota constitutions, statutes, and cases regarding criminal law. Exercise sound, independent judgment. Argue legal matters persuasively and to present clear, cohesive arguments. Research, analyze and respond to a variety of legal issues and problems. See, read and understand complex documents. Represent the city professionally and positively. Communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively, both in verbal and written formats including effective public speaking and presentation skills and technique. Handle multiple cases simultaneously. Navigate sensitive and high-pressure situations effectively. Acumen to prepare, administer and manage a budget. Demonstrate ability to set clear goals and expectations, supervise staff, delegate tasks effectively, and monitor team performance to ensure alignment with department and organizational objectives. Ability to provide a level of customer service that meets or exceeds customer expectation and satisfaction. Embrace and engage in cultural shift toward Continuous Improvement. Proven ability and demonstrated commitment to an inclusive workplace related to racial equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Desired Qualifications: Advanced knowledge of criminal prosecution and a strong, established familiarity with the Hennepin County District Court. Prior experience practicing specifically within a municipal government framework, including a strong understanding of city ordinances and the local legislative process. Proficiency with standard prosecutors' case management systems. Two or more years of experience directly supervising and evaluating attorneys, and paralegals, and legal support staff within a prosecutorial or criminal defense environment. Active membership or leadership roles in professional legal associations, such as the MN County Attorneys Association (MCAA ) and Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA) Criminal Law Section. Familiarity with digital evidence, including body-worn camera footage, digital forensics and electronic discovery disclosure rules. Experience working with people from various cultural, socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds. Continuous learning in racial equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility space. Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Russian, Somali, Lao or Vietnamese language(s).
