Property Tax Director

Responsibilities

  • Lead the property tax function for a large, multi-state real estate portfolio across hundreds of taxing jurisdictions.
  • Oversee annual property tax budgeting, forecasting, accruals, expense analysis, and payment processes.
  • Develop long-term property tax strategies while evaluating legislative changes and their financial impact.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Finance, Accounting, FP&A, Operations, Asset Management, Technology, and executive leadership.
  • Manage relationships with third-party vendors responsible for property tax payments, appeals, compliance, and legal matters.
  • Direct the appeals process across multiple states while ensuring compliance and cost optimization.
  • Prepare executive-level reporting, financial analyses, and presentations supporting business decisions.
  • Utilize reporting and planning tools to improve forecasting accuracy and operational efficiency.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and development for the property tax team while fostering collaboration across departments.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements, automation, and technology enhancements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Real Estate, or a related field.
  • Progressive leadership experience managing complex, multi-state property tax operations.
  • Strong background in budgeting, forecasting, accrual accounting, financial analysis, and reporting.
  • Experience managing third-party vendors, consultants, and external business partners.
  • Able to communicate effectively with executive leadership and present financial information to senior stakeholders.
  • Advanced analytical and systems skills with experience utilizing reporting and planning tools.
  • A strong understanding of property tax regulations and valuation processes across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Real estate industry experience is preferred; candidates from mortgage or other related industries are encouraged to apply.
  • Property tax certification is preferred but not required.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Employment Type: Direct Hire

  • Travel: Minimal (approximately 2-3 trips annually)
  • Salary: Competitive compensation package based on experience
