About the role

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Property and Evidence Technician to join our Support Services team. In this critical role, you will receive, document, preserve and safeguard criminal evidence and impounded, lost, or abandoned property submitted by law enforcement personnel and other authorized entities.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, preserve, document and record property/evidence from Sheriff’s Office personnel and other authorized personnel
  • Safeguard the potential evidentiary qualities (i.e. drying, refrigerating), maintain the chain of custody and dispose of a wide variety of property items having potential biological, chemical or contamination hazard and carcinogenic or health damaging properties
  • Maintain detailed inventory
  • Prepare drug/weapon destruction requests, research cases, contact case agents, other police agencies, and submit requests to the State Attorney’s Office for disposition
  • Record, tag or engrave all property
  • Perform periodic physical inventory of property and submit inventory reports
  • Inventories, controls, provides security for, and supervises the storage and release of valuable properties designated for the vault
  • Utilize the computer to enter required information for record keeping, correspondence, reports and inquiry
  • Access property and evidence for various law enforcement agencies and the public by utilizing large mobile machinery (i.e. forklift)
  • Collections property and evidence from various pick-up locations throughout Pinellas County utilizing an agency vehicle
  • Gathers and maintains strict control over items to be auctioned and money to be turned in to Fiscal Affairs
  • Performs all functions of the job classification without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace

Requirements

  • Three (3) years’ responsible experience in records management, inventory control, warehousing, or related field
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience

Qualifications

  • High School graduation or equivalent diploma from an institution accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) or licensed as a degree granting institution by the Commission for Independent Education
  • Valid Florida driver’s license

Skills

  • Knowledge of Florida Statutes, various databases and research software, and agency policies related to evidence handling and property disposition
  • Ability to interpret legal documents, court orders, and statutory requirements
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to safely operate a vehicle, warehouse equipment, and other mobile machinery
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities under pressure

Pay

$20.22/hour

Schedule

Monday-Friday, 5:00am-1:00pm or 12:30pm-8:00pm

Background Investigation

The background investigation process may take up to 6 weeks depending upon the complexity of the applicant's background and position for which they've applied.

Physical Abilities

  • Sit up to 6 hours per day
  • Stand up to 6 hour per day
  • Walk up to 2 hours per day
  • Drive up to 4 hour per day
  • Frequently lift up to 50 lbs
  • Occasionally lift up to 75 lbs
  • Frequently bend, squat, climb, reach, kneel and twist

Essential Functions

  • Work in a warehouse environment without A/C (summer) or heat (winter)
  • Lift and move items of all shapes and sizes (i.e. lifting a bike into a high rack or heavy items)
  • Learn how to drive a fork lift
