Project Engineer I - Construction
SEG is seeking an early-career Project Engineer I to join our team in Hamilton, Virginia. This developmental construction management role offers hands-on experience managing commercial and institutional projects, working alongside SEG’s Project Managers, Superintendents, and field teams.
About the role
This position provides exposure to all phases of construction—from estimating and preconstruction through project execution and closeout. It is designed to build the experience and management skills necessary to grow within SEG’s Project Management or Field Operations teams.
Responsibilities
- Support Project Managers and Superintendents throughout all phases of construction
- Coordinate and track RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and other project documentation
- Maintain project logs, controls, and documentation
- Assist with subcontractor pricing, buyout, purchase orders, and subcontract administration
- Support change management, including obtaining pricing, preparing estimates and proposals, and maintaining change documentation
- Assist with quantity takeoffs and project estimating
- Help develop and maintain project schedules
- Review drawings, specifications, and shop drawings to support coordination of the work
- Assist with project constructability reviews and value-engineering opportunities
- Help identify potential project issues and work with the team to develop solutions
- Support project closeout and turnover activities
- Participate in project and staff meetings
- Visit project sites as needed throughout the region
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field, with 0–3 years of commercial or industrial construction experience; OR 5+ years of directly related experience without a degree
- Basic understanding of construction means, methods, drawings, and specifications
- Strong organizational and analytical skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with project teams, subcontractors, and clients
- Comfortable working with spreadsheets and construction-related software
- Ability and willingness to travel to project sites within the region
Preferred Qualifications
- EIT or other construction industry certification
- OSHA 30, First Aid/CPR, and USACE/NAVFAC CQM certifications (may be obtained as part of professional development)
