Project Archaeologist/Cultural Resources Specialist

About the role

Arcadis is seeking a mid to senior-level Archaeologist/Cultural Resources Specialist within our cultural resources practice in the Northeast U.S. You will serve as a Principal Investigator (PI) within the Northeast U.S. Cultural Resources team and provide oversight for junior staff and field crews, as well as assist with the management of client-specific programs and projects. You will also provide quality assurance planning and review for execution of cultural resources work in the Northeast U.S.

Arcadis is specifically looking for an archaeologist/cultural resource specialist with environmental planning and permitting experience in the general Northeast U.S., however, experience in New York and New Jersey is required. This position requires knowledge and experience working in this part of the U.S. at a federal and state level.

Responsibilities

• Apply technical knowledge to develop creative, effective, and economical solutions to address project issues
• Serve as a Principal Investigator in the Northeast U.S., working on multiple projects including all levels of investigation (Phases I–III, archaeological monitoring)
• Conduct fieldwork, lead field assessments, and manage archaeological field staff and crews (including subcontractors)
• Provide supervision, training, technical direction, and mentoring to junior-level staff
• Interact with project and program managers as part of an interdisciplinary environmental team
• Use GPS systems and ability to walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, carrying supplies up to 40 pounds
• Prepare technical analysis and documents and provide guidance and senior technical review on project documents prepared by junior staff
• Travel up to 40%, including overnight travel

Qualifications

• Meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards in archaeology
• Master’s degree in archaeology or a related field
• Minimum 7 years of experience in cultural resources management, with a combination of field- and office-based experience and roles
• Working knowledge of Pre-Contact, Historic, and Industrial Archaeology; experience in urban and industrial sites
• Demonstrated knowledge of cultural resources management and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA)
• Proven experience supervising field crews
• Experience completing all aspects of investigations from planning (e.g., budgets and proposals) to final report

Pay

The salary range for this position is $79,920 – $143,856. Actual salaries will vary and are based on several factors, such as experience, education, budget, internal equity, project, and location.
