About the role
The Senior Project Accountant coordinates all phases of the construction job costing process, including categorizing, recording, analyzing, and monitoring costs and billings for a large construction project and several smaller, less complex projects. This role ensures vendor compliance to manage project risk and works closely with the Project Manager to maintain timely and accurate accounting and risk management throughout the project lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Compiles, prepares, and analyzes monthly project billings per contract requirements for complex accounts.
- Monitors budgets and commitments, processes subcontractor and vendor invoices, prepares drafts of owner invoices, and resolves issues.
- Partners with the project manager and team members to monitor overall job financial status.
- Collaborates by preparing for and attending progress and division meetings.
- Prepares monthly reports with current estimates and identifies risks or opportunities.
- Prepares special analyses as required.
- Serves as a mentor and provides training or supervision to less-experienced Project Accountants.
Qualifications
- Excellent accounting knowledge.
- Strong organizational skills with a high level of attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to transfer knowledge to junior staff.
- Ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure.
- Strong problem-solving skills to analyze and resolve difficult issues.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion.
- Intermediate to expert proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and other technical tools.
- Ability to remain flexible in a rapidly changing environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance or equivalent preferred.
- 5+ years of Project Accounting experience preferred.
- Experience in construction preferred.
