Programming & Audience Engagement Director
Role Description
The Programming & Audience Engagement Director leads KUNM’s multiplatform content strategy and helps grow engagement across broadcast, digital, social, newsletters, podcasts, and on-demand content. Key responsibilities include developing, implementing, and promoting program schedules, production initiatives, and multi-platform content strategies to support programming quality, audience engagement, and station objectives. This role oversees programming, content distribution, and audience engagement activities for the University's radio station, KUNM. The Director also collaborates with News, Music, and station leadership on related programming and content activities, and partners with senior leaders in News and Development to ensure organizational strategies in on-air fundraising and community engagement are coordinated and effective.
About the Role
This member of the Sr. Leadership Team ensures compliance with University, FCC, and other applicable regulations; supervises programming and production staff, volunteers, and independent producers; and collaborates with News, Music, and station leadership on related programming and content activities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five (5) or more years of editorial or content leadership experience, with at least three (3) years in audience development, programming, or applicable management expertise.
- Three (3) or more years of demonstrated experience in broadcast programming, on-air production, or content scheduling.
- Significant experience leading audience strategy, with the ability to balance long-term planning with the flexibility to adapt to emerging opportunities and challenges.
- Three (3) years of demonstrated management skills, including experience setting goals, mentoring staff and collaborating across departments.
- Demonstrated success translating audience data and analytics into actionable editorial, product and membership strategies.
- Excellence in writing and editing for audio platforms, coaching talent and shaping the brand and promise of a media organization.
- Three (3) or more years of leading multiplatform content strategy and distribution, including broadcast, podcasting, on-demand, newsletters, search/SEO, social media and emerging platforms.
- Comfort with analytics tools such as Nielsen/ RRC/ Audigraphics data, Google Analytics, or similar, to inform content and platform strategy, and the ability to communicate insights clearly to colleagues.
- An understanding of — or deep interest in learning about — the issues impacting the daily lives and the culture of New Mexicans.
- A collaborative, solutions-oriented approach to problem-solving, with the ability to thrive in a small, mission-driven team.
