This is an unpaid internship through the DoD SkillBridge Program for transitioning active-duty US military personnel within their final 180 days of service.

About the role

This internship opportunity resides with All-Domain Operations (ADO), a business group within HII’s Mission Technologies division. The intern will train as an All Domain Operations (ADO) Program Manager, reporting to a designated Mission Technologies Program Manager. The primary goal is learning program management principles, technologies, and core operational functions, as well as the roles and responsibilities of program/project management within a civilian contracting firm. A secondary goal is achieving a cross-organizational understanding of how industry works. The intern will be assigned special projects as needed and will support a program contained at one primary geographic location, covering remote locations and multiple business functions.

Responsibilities

• Learn core functions of program management, including software technologies, government contracting procedures, and managing program operations to ensure production schedules are met.
• Gain a functional understanding of schedule, performance, and risk identification/mitigation on initiatives including systems, tools, equipment, software, facilities, and other activities.
• Be oriented to profit and loss of a large complex program.
• Train on all phases of programs from inception through completion.
• Learn processes to track cost, schedule, and technical performance of company programs.
• Participate in training phases covering program management basics, federal contracting, and project coordination.
• Network and receive introductions to senior leadership within the All Domain Operations (ADO) Business Group.

Training Plan

Phase 1 - Basics

• Week 1: In-processing, introductions, and office familiarization.
• Week 2: Introduction to Program Management, Operations, Annual Operating Plans, and business development.
• Week 3: Introduction to primary customer contact for program activities, leading program review sessions with customers to discuss cost, schedule, and technical performance.
• Week 4: Introduction to program milestones and monitoring adherence to master plans and schedules; identifying program problems and obtaining solutions.
• Week 5: Introduction to the work of employees, including management-level staff assigned to the program from technical, manufacturing, and administrative areas.

Phase 2 – Program Management

• Week 6: Project Management Institute resources, research, and PMBOK training for PMP certification exam.
• Week 7: Review of HII Mission Technologies portfolio, including C5 intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C5ISR), cyber, secure enterprise IT engineering and operations, military training and simulation, logistics management, and fleet maintenance.
• Week 8: Coordinate resolutions to production-related problems.
• Week 9: Manage required manpower support levels throughout the period of performance of the task order.

Phase 3 – Federal Contracting

• Week 10: Learn about HII Mission Technologies’ existing FEDSIM and IAC MAC contract vehicles, available ceilings for additional revenue generation, and how DoD customers use these pathways.
• Week 11: Understand how Operations interacts with and supports Growth elements—Business Development, Capture Management, and Proposals.
• Week 12: Learn about standardization practices across business groups, process options to suit specific needs, and preventing project failures.
• Week 13: Review of the previous 12 weeks and conclusion of the internship.

Requirements

• Active-duty military personnel within the final 180 days of service (applications accepted within the final 12 months).
• Transitioning US military service member with program/project experience and a technical background.
• Commitment to learning HII standards and skills in Program and Project Management.

Preferred Qualifications

• 10-15+ years of Program Management experience.
• PMP/PMI certification.
• DAWIA Level 3 certification.
