Position Summary

YMCA of Greater Houston Youth Development Director supports the Y's mission to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This role oversees afterschool and day camp programs in the Greater Houston area, fostering a safe and positive environment that encourages youth exploration and growth.

Essential Functions

  • Provides oversight and coordinates high quality youth development programs in afterschool and outdoor day camp settings, adhering to YMCA program model, curriculum, and quality standards.

  • Maintains safety and engagement of camp grounds through regular training and compliance with state and local regulations.

  • Affirms compliance with YMCA program standards and risk management policies.

  • Plans, organizes, and implements age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities, fostering innovation and risk-taking.

  • Recruits, hires, and trains required program staff to meet licensing standards and Y staffing ratios, evaluating staff performance and developing strategies to motivate them.

  • Manages program finances, ensuring fiscal responsibility and meeting budget goals through forecasting and monitoring.

  • Implements marketing strategies to promote program growth and brand exposure, expanding services within the community.

  • Buys into community engagement by building relationships with families, school administration, and other organizations, responding to inquiries and complaints promptly.

  • Monitors and evaluates program effectiveness, participating in the annual fundraising campaign, and supporting staff in their participation.

  • Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors, follows mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements, and adheres to policies related to boundaries with children.

Job Requirements

  • 3-5 years previous experience, including 2 years supervisory experience in licensed childcare.

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience.

  • Meet Director qualifications as stated in the Minimum Standards (#744.1015) under TDPRS.

  • At least 21 years of age.

  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention trainings.

  • Previous experience with diverse populations.

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).

  • Current record of tuberculosis examination and/or local health department regulations, examinations, and/or immunizations.

  • Available for trainings on occasional weekends and after hours.

This position has supervisory responsibilities.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent experience.

Reasoning Abilities

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly walks, stands, bends, and reaches.

  • Frequently uses hands to finger, handle, and/or feel objects, tools, and/or controls.

  • Uses computer for extended periods of time and communicates using a computer and phone/smart device.

  • Communicates verbally and in writing.

Work Environment

  • The work environment is usually moderate in noise level.

  • Travel is primarily local between assigned centers during the business day, with some out-of-area and overnight travel expected.

  • Hours are flexible with scheduling and availability to work operational hours of the YMCA, which may include day, evening, weekends, and/or holidays, based on center needs.
