About the role
The Program Assistant will help set up, take down, and assist in running the morning shift (Monday through Thursday) education program for ages 2-4. Responsibilities include planning, implementing, and instructing lesson plans to support educational and youth development growth, preparing children for kindergarten.
Responsibilities
- Arrive before the program begins to set up equipment and perform a safety inspection.
- Attend all staff meetings.
- Follow all safety standards and personal policies set by the YMCA.
- Create a nurturing and safe environment by reporting suspicious activity that may lead to child abuse or violate the code of conduct.
- Keep supplies organized, maintain and clean the facility, and care for equipment.
- Maintain a clean and safe appearance of the field and storage room at all times.
- Be enthusiastic and positive when working with players, coaches, and parents.
- Always wear the YMCA staff shirt, name tag, SMART pin, and appropriate athletic attire.
- Follow the instructions of your supervisor and communicate with other staff members.
- Report all incidents or accidents to the supervisor.
- Role model SMART Key Leadership Competencies: Volunteerism, Inclusion, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Functional Expertise.
Requirements
- Minimum age of 16 years.
- Good understanding of game rules and required equipment.
- Good verbal communication skills for interacting with program participants and parents.
- Must complete the following trainings upon hire:
- Intro to the Y's Cause & Culture
- Y's Way to Service & Engagement
- I Hear You: Service with CARE
- Must complete the following trainings within 90 days of hire:
- Preventing Sexual Abuse Between Young Children
- Principles of Youth Development
- Youth Affirmations: Distinguishing Between Praise and Encouragement
- Foundations of Listen First
- Get SMART, CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications preferred.
- Familiarize yourself with YMCA rules and policies within 90 days of employment.
Skills
- Ability to plan, implement, and instruct lesson plans for early childhood education.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Physical ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs (e.g., a person or program supplies); must ask for assistance for weights over 30 lbs.
- Ability to stand for extended periods while demonstrating physical stamina and agility.
